Speed Tale from a few weeks ago
I haven't really taken 'herman' to any great speed for any length of time because of the road conditions in Houston and the fear of a ticket. But a few weeks ago I had the chance to drive on the Hardy Toll Road from Downtown to Conroe (44 miles). On the way up I was just amazed at the road. It was beautiful, straight, smooth and deviod of cops. I fanticized about opening up the engine and letting 'herman' breathe. Well on the trip back I got my chance. I cautiously crept up to 90 and would back off whenever I encountered cars. I was at 90 for about 2 minutes and there were no taillights in front of me or behind so I squeezed the trigger up to about 105. Absolutely rock steady - very stable. Another minute and still no cars anywhere so I plodded to about 115. At this speed everything moves by so fast I hardly noticed that we'd run out of road. The Hardy Toll Road was ending in about 1 mile and I had to get down to normal speeds. I felt that I was crawling at a snails pace when I merged on to 59 South at 70. When I finally dropped off my friend in Downtown I noticed the time. It took us 36 minutes to go from Conroe to Downtown Houston. God bless the Hardy Toll Road. :-)

Yeah, the worst part of cruising over 100+ or so...is having to come back down to 60-70...feels like a funeral procession!

Driving on the track ...
is where I get my real speed thrills, but the reality is that when I am on the track the long straights are kind of boring ... just the place to catch my breath and get ready for the next set of turns. VIR is the fastest track I have driven on, where I was peaking at about 130 on the back straight .... just as you come over the crest of a blind hill with a sharp left turn shortly afterwards. Don't spend much time looking at the speedo in those circumstances!
It is a hell of a lot safer place to go fast than on the highway!
All of that is done in a Boxster S, of course, not the ar. But I am playing with the idea of putting the ar on the track this year, once I get some real tires on it.
