Strange whining Noise at start-up - Need Help

A strange whining noise started happening a few days ago. It only occurs when I fire up the engine after it's been sitting for a while. It goes away after a few minutes.

It's a relatively high pitched sound and is coming from somewhere in the engine compartment. The engine responds normally though.

Any ideas what it could be? The engine is packed in so tight I can't get a visual on where it's coming from.

Best,
Robert

It is the secondary airpump. It's a fan that is located against the firewall at the rear of the right engine bank. It blows air into the exhaust system on startup and at idle when the engine is cold. The fan is fairly expensive to replace and the bearings only last so long. There is a posting on the A6 board where someone took it apart and replaced the bearings but it sounded like the fix was short lived. It only impacts the pollution control system and will not cause a problem with the engines normal function. You may get a check engine light if the air flow drops very low or the fan quits all together but again it won't stop the car. They can run for a long time making noise and still operate.

Hey Grat,

Thanks for the quick response. Let's hope the thing does not die on me completely. I'd rather not spend the $$ to fix it. My extended warrantee justran out yesterday!

Ouch, bad timing on the warranty. :) The fan/pimp itself is like $500 though it is a simple DYI job. Mine has been making noise for a year+ easy.

I rebuilt mine and replaced the bearings, I think it will probably last as long as I own the car now.

It was a fairly simple job if you have tools and skills commensurate with working on your Audi, otherwise it's expensive. I think my new bearings cost me $15....

I did a write up on it, look in search under Secondary Air Injection Pump.

Here's the link....https://www.audiworld.com/forums/sho....php?t=2778668

Good luck!

Very helpful. Thanks a bunch

Yup - it's the secondary air injection pump alright. From the looks of it I could remove it pretty easily, I have the tools and know how to use them. Problem is the wifey does not want a "homebrew fix" on our beloved ar. So off to Rector Motors we go.

I'm going to keep the current one though and take it apart, fix it and keep it as a back-up.

Yeah, that was mine that didn't seem fixed at first, but after it ran a couple of times it quieted down with the new bearings and is now pretty much inaudible. I'd call it a success, at a cost of about $20.

TT whining when starts moving from Idl

Hi Guys
MAy be you can help me with my TT whining noise,

Recently my TT 2000(MK1) starts whining in driver side. It happens when I

release the clutch in the first gear to start moving, and after speed passes 3-5 mph the

whining noise disappears, I don't have this issue with revers gear. I can not

detect it if it comes from axle, wheel or transmission or at least I don't know

how to :) !...
Any idea what it is ?
Thanks

check the on-line prices, I got mine from ECS tuning, genuine Bosch for $220 bucks or thereabouts. I am sure the other on-line retailers have them. Less than half Audi (but you don't get the 4 rings or the white parts box to unwrap and recycle)!.
