For those who are on the fence about an extended warranty, here is my story.......
Here is my experience with my 2002 allroad 2.7T tip. I purchased the warranty, (Audi Pure Protection or APP), right before the 50K mark. I purchased the Platinum Package, (exclusionary coverage), with $0.00 deductible for $2850.00. Little did I know how much money this warranty was going to save me in the long run.
I now have 96K miles on the clock and my warranty runs out Jan. 1 2009. Here is my breakdown on all repairs done under the warranty:
64,155 miles - center cup holder broken - $78.80
67,224 miles - Cam shaft adjuster seals leaking
and 2 leaking motor mounts - $3247.00
68,734 miles - 1st transmission failure - $5777.76
75,511 miles - Faulty brake light switch and torn throttle body boot - $358.10
86,232 miles - Faulty ignition control module and passenger door latch (door not shutting properly) - $670.59
88,274 miles - blown right side turbo - $3636.21
93,949 miles - faulty ribbed belt tensioner bearing - $1715.29
95,120 miles - power steering pump (loud squeel caused by the extra tension the new belt tensioner was putting on it) - $921.83
95,232 miles - 2nd transmission failure - $5829.72
For a grand total of $22,235.30
Keep in mind, all work was done at an Audi dealership and all charges included a loaner/rental car.
I purchased the warranty because I am not a DIY person. Some things I have been able to fix/repair/maintain myself such as cv boots, brakes, headlights and the sort. Others have helped as well, (this comment directed towards ar-rings, thanks again for the help the other night with the rear brakes).
I wanted to share this information with everyone to show that not everyone may need a warranty but they do come in handy for some of us and mine has more than paid for itself over and over.

"Just put your $2850 in a savings account and use it to pay for repairs"
Oh wait, you mean there can be significant downside to that arrogant statement?
I got several times the cost of my warranty back on my S4.

Re: great post
I purchased a Wynn's extended warranty to 100,000 miles or 7 years.
So far I have not needed it because I'm still on the 4 year manufacturer's warranty. But in that time I did have an oil leak repaired and front right area of windshield seal was loose/leaking.
I don't remember what the charges for these repairs were, because I didn't pay a thing.
The warranty cost is a small fixed price to pay for 7 years or 50,000 additional miles of driving pleasure.

A comment on the Wynn's extended waarranty coverage
It seems like I have to fight them on everything. The do not always reimburse at the going labor rate. Repairs get delayed while going back and forth with them. Some of these may be ext warranties in general, but I'm not impressed with them. When I've tried to escalate within the Wynn's org, I've been told by the CSR that they have the final say and then they hang up. All that being said, I've gotten my policy cost back from them, but it's been painful. Also, they do not cover the air bags, so that was another 1800 for the fronts as well. I'm done whining now ...

No, just the one. I did contemplate it though. My service tech told me.......
that he looked at it pretty closely and advised me not to do the repair.
Obviously if it goes then they get to do a big fat repair again on the left one. That being said, I was prepared to pay the extra $800.00 or so at the time to do the left one as well and they still advised against it. I would like to think that they have my best interests in mind and I imagine they are some dealers who do look out for their customers and some who will rob you blind. I instead had the timing belt, water pump, and thermostat done at the 89K mark since it save me about $350.00 in labor since they had a lot of the front end off.
We'll see.......

Makes me feel lucky.
Through over 100K miles, all I've every had to change was a tie rod and a pair of CV joint boots, and now a couple of sensors (OK, my center cup holder also broke, but didn't bother to replace it).
2 transmission failures?!! That's amazing. Glad I have the 6 speed.
