Default Time for K04's

Does anyone know if you absolutely must pull the engine to swap turbos? The bentley manual says you have to...

Default yes, you have to.

you pretty much have to disassemble the front of the car to get the motor out

so you can get to the turbos to remove them

Default I've spoken to a tech or two about this...

while it can be done without taking the engine out. The room to work is very limited, special tools could be needed, its just so much easier if you take the motor out.

Default Having the transmission removed presently makes me think it's still to hard to get at turbos.

Just pull the motor, much less of a headache. Tranny is a big enough pain to remove with engine still in. It doesn't help in my case because the tech at AWE must not have used anti seize on the downpipe to turbo nuts so all but 2 of the studs pulled out of the turbos instead of the nuts coming off.

Pulling the motor - 40-ish hours for a complete first timer (me). Not terrible.

Default Flywheel, clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing. My car was getting harder and harder to get into

gear when running, reverse was almost impossible.

I had an AWE stage 2 clutch which locks down the self adjusting mechanism. Took apart and dual mass flywheel has almost 1 1/2" of play in circular motion between crank and pressure plate part of dual mass, new 1 has 1/4" max. Flywheel had .006 runout also.

I went to a RS4 pressure plate with stock clutch disc since I think I destroyed the flywheel with the ceramic disc clutch. Hopefully I will get more then 25K mileage out of next clutch to since it has the SAC mechanism functioning.

I heard on the S4 you could just drop the subframe? (if you had a lift) True? Not possible on an AR?

Should work on allroad too, would need an alignment after install with subframe removal.

Default For a DIY, yes it is much easier. WMS in so-cal can do it in the car IIRC.

I did mine out of the car along with a few other goodies.
