Default Tip shifter question- can you shift between D & S without depressing the shifter button?...

My allroad will shift from D to S and back to D without ever pushing in the shifter interlock button on the side of the shifter handle. All other interlock functions work correctly.

I've driven loaners- '03 allroad, '03 A6 2.7, '03 A6 4.2, '04 A6 2.7- and they all require pushing in the button to shift from D to anything.

I ask because from day one of ownership I complained about a noise in the area below the shifter- sounded like pieces of metal rattling and vibrating. Dealer took it apart and found "loose change" in there. Rattling stopped. Now, I've never had any loose change anywhere in the car but my pocket. I think the noise was some broken pieces of the shifter interlock but the dealer say's no- this is the way they all are.

I kinda like it this way, but wonder if it's normal.

Didn't mean to hijack your post, but it reminded me to post this question. Thanks

Default Unencumbered D->S->D without button on my 2002.

No real point for a lockout since it's just an electric switch.
