Towing question: what have you towed with your allroad?
I was considering getting a small coach (16' Airstream Bambi) for me and the family to go camping but I looked at the tongue weight and the tow weight and I'm concerned that my allroad will not be able to tow it.
2855 weight - with all of the water and accesories I can see this going to 3200
325 tongue
Thoughts?

That puts you at the rated limits of the towing system...
I tow a few times a month... open 8x5 with two sportbikes, 100# of fuel and 100# of stuff with out issue. Others on the forum have towed boats of good size so you will probably be okay. Rent one and tow it and see if it works.

I have towed 20' Boston Whaler over Cascades to Idaho from Western Wa in 90 degree heat. Estimated weight 3200 #. No problem pulling but even with trailer brakes you know the weight is back there when you are braking. I also had four people and probably 400 # of stuff in the car.

Why is there a difference between US and UK?
I would like to be able to tow a 3200 pound car on a trailer to track events but will clearly hit almost 5000 pounds with the combo ... especially with extra wheels and so on. Is there any structural difference between the US/UK cars or is it greater concern over product liability in the US?

I know of no physical difference in this area...
so my guess is also liability. Too bad we don't get the TDi which would make an even better tow-rig.
I did about 750 miles towing my open car trailer last year, gross weights from 2100-2800 lbs and was really impressed. With the 2100 pound load, you almost forget it's back there. Power and braking are more than adequate. Even the mileage didn't suffer very much. I'll be towing my racecar around to quite a few events this summer too.
This was a major reason I ditched the S4 for an allroad.

No problem for 6-speed
I regularly tow a 16x7 cargo trailer that is 2200lbs empty and has brakes. I am careful how I load it to avoid a heavy tongue weight. I've have 4k lbs in it many times with no problem. If you have an automatic transmission you need to be careful with the type of trailer. Acura is the only company that rates their SUV towing capacity properly. They list one capacity for boats and another for cargo trailers that have a lot of wind resistance. That said, if your pulling a box trailer close to 3500 lbs you better have electric brakes, a 6-speed or tranny cooler.. I also pull a 3800 lb boat with no problem.

I thought of an analogy for sprung vs unsprung weight.Imagine running w/weight attached to your feet
