Default unscientific handling question

Our minivan had a tranny problem so we took the bone stock '04 tip on its first long trip--st. louis to DC and back with wife, three kids and toooo many toys in back.

At highway speeds the car felt like it wanted to jump sideways a bit when hitting bumps in the road. I think that might be normal on curves, but I noticed it even on straight sections. I've never noticed this before on the ar (I have on my dad's old alfa romeo), but I don't do tons of highway driving either. Do you think it's due to extra weight, the p6 tires, or the extra inflation pressure. I followed the door label for once and went 39f/42r.

Default Similar Experience on a test drive

It felt the the back of the car would hop around turns, did not end up buying that one. It was an '01 with the Pirelli's. Have not noticed it on my '02

Default moto-one explained this long ago

IIRC, the Michelin engineer assigned to him for Solo2 autocross (not in the Audi) ascribed this to incompatibility between the stiffness of the tire sidewalls and the rear shocks. All i know is that the problem pretty much went away for me when i changed from S-03's (hard as a brick) to Goodyear F1 GS-D3's (softer sidewall).

Default Might have been too much rear tire pressure...

...keep in mind the 3 person icon probably assumes heavier adults, not 3 kids.

P6's aren't hard in the sidewall though.

Before the H-Sports, My car would do the same thing. I hated it and thought it very unsafe.

Default AFAIK, rear pressure should never be higher than front. Of course, I'm not looking at

my TPs label right now, so I could be wrong.

Default My car did that when I ran the Pilot Sport A/S. Michelin engineer said....

tire wasn't compatible with the suspension. Like dan farmer said of moto-one's post, these soft suspensions don't like really stiff tires. But the Michelin engineer also attributed it to the sensitivity of the suspension to alignment being spot-on, and their research showed the rear suspension design of all allroad/A6 quattros as well as rear suspensions of Benz seans were extremely sensitive to alignment when used in conjunction with modern design performance tires. Might want to have the alignment, rear in particular, checked.

I regularly run my allroad with the family and luggage on trips and have no problems with either my 18" Goodyear F1 GS-D3 or my 17" Dunlop M3 snows. Just came back from a 725 mile run from PA to Chicago with close to 500 lbs of weight in the back running aggressive speeds and not once did the car step out of line.

Actually, it's 39psi front, 42psi rear. for 17" and 18" wheels.
