Vanogen coolant temp mod????
Anyone heard of this? I literally cut and pasted from another forum, no clue about it, so I figured I'd bounce off the brain trust here:
It's not a very well known mod but it's awesome....Go buy a vanogen coolant temp switch. Remove yours (should be green) Replace with new blue one....now instead of your coolant after run pump kicking on at 240*F it will turn on at 190*F....pretty much every time you drive the car....so for 10 minuted after you turn the key off the coolant after run pump will continue to cool your turbos and motor....fan is turned on also on setting 2 of 4..

I believe that mod contributed to premature Battery kills; the car is on it's 3rd battery :-(
IIRC, about 2 years ago or so we exchanged the green switch with a blue one to trigger this behavior, works great, but watch the battery becuse the fans keep spinning quite a bit longer ;-)

read about it and it really doesn't do anything to help....
Being the coolant is 225-250 degrees during normal driving, the pump will be on when you shut down regardless.
IIRC, someone did a minute by minute comparison of the coolant temps and in 10 minutes time found only a slight 5 degree difference with using the VW sensor.

I'm in the midst of trying to verify this sensor. Color may have been switched to black. But yes,
seems it's from a eurovan (transporter IV specifically).
Still on the fence as to whether or not I want to install it. Picked it up as it was cheap. As Paulroad said, it really only minimized temp by a few degrees. And like others have stated, these engines should be plenty capable of handling heat soak.

click

Keep in mind the temp sensors are no where near the turbos...
...it's the turbo's you are trying to keep cool...not the sensors ;-)
The increase in temp at the sensors when the pump is NOT running is pure convection. Imagine the temp spike at the turbo's.
When the pump is running you know the coolant temp is pretty even through-out the system.

News to me if it switched to black...
...make sure it's a 2-pin (20mm) sensor you have or you may have the wrong one. All of mine have been blue. Works fine in the AR, been in mine for ~2 years.
As to heat-soak, they don't take it that well as the after-run pumps get brittle and crack when not in use in the 2.7T location. Usually around 90-100k miles.
Put the same/similar pump in a 1.8T, 5ktq, 951...and they don't crack like old-faithful.

Here's a link to a pic of the sensor. Indeed it is two-pronged, but lacks the correct PN stamped on

Tried testing w/ multimeter already to no avail.

old thread just for reference

Should be open circuit when cold.....if so, drop'r in........
....worst thing it will do is not trip at a low enough temp.
Mine shows the correct part number on the side. Probably just an off brand.
