Default What's the Whirrr?

Almost always about 1 minute after starting and driving I get a quick, small electric motor whirring. It sounds like this: wHIRRrrrr.

At first I thought it might be mirrors or something but I've watched everything I can and I can't tell where it's coming from. Sounds like from the front left somewhere. Anyone else get this?

Default Self check

I seem to recall reading that in the 1st minute of driving some systems go through a self-check. My car does it too, and always has.

I am almost postive that what you are hearing is the air pump for the supension system as it cycles. This is especially noticeable when the car is just started as the supension self- levels.

Default the pump for the suspension is in the back by the gas tank..... =)

or atleast that was my understanding..... if his ears are fooling him and it is actually coming from the back, you are absolutely right, it is the suspension whiRRRrrling....

Default My motor Whirrr got louder, hear it alot after I stop for a moment...

could it be the turbos?? I have it in service today for my 20K and I'm having them check this a a few little things:
1. 20 K service 2. wiper & washers adjust 3. Whirr motor sound from below 4. after motor sound after closing in exterior mirrors

Otherwise after one year at 20k miles. I LOVE THIS CAR!

Default Same Noise

The noise that I get seems to originate from the rear of the car and cycles on for about a second or so after I have turned onto hard pavement from a deeply rutted dirt road (about one minute from the house). The noise is higher pitched and more like an electric motor or a pump of sorts but not the low growl of the air compressor. I have always attributed it to the self-leveling suspension actuating.

Default Air pump

The allroad, and I think most other new Audi's have an air pump in the engine to circulate air from the exhaust to warm up the cats faster. Once the engine has begun warming up, you should not here this any more.

And, yes, the pump for the suspension is in the back of the car.
