Winter tires and wheels
I have a 2004 Allroad and need a set of winter tires. Any suggestions or experience with Toyo Observe G-02 or Pirelli Scorpion Ice & Snow? Are 16" rims necessary for good performance in snow?

Where do you live? How much snow do you get?
I'm in NY..Long Island. I had no problem with my oem Goodyears last winter...untill they started to wear thin.. 30K miles. I switched to the Falken All Season 512's and they handled perfectly..for the area.. If I were to go special..4 winter tires..Id go with the Nokian.. the best winter tire there is.(So I've been told)

Last winter we made it through on Michelin Pilot Sport A/S in stock size. I had the 16 inch wheels and spacers and wanted to give them a try. I found new Michelins for $60 per tire.
Frankly, I was not please with the amount of snow packing I got last winter with the 17 inch wheels, both inside the wheelwell and inside the wheel itself.
My thinking is the smaller wheel won't pack as bad on the inside and the use of real snow tires and removing the "mudflaps" might negate the packing in the wheelwell.
If I didn't have the 16's I would be mounting either Nokians or the Michelin X-ice that I think you can get at Costco for around 100-125 per tire.

Re: Where do you live? How much snow do you get?
I live in Central Oregon about 20 miles from Mt Bachelor Ski Resort. In town driving isn't too bad, but the Cascade mountain passes can be horrible. The trip to the mountain is littered with Calfornia drivers who can't drive in the snow so good winter tires are a must.

Re: Winter tires and wheels
I am new to allroad but not to winter.
The NOKIAN HAKKAPELIITTA is an amazing tire it can make you start looking for unplowed roads to play on. You will feel a little more motion of the side walls then a premium low profile summer tire but not bad, and boy do they go in snow. I started using them when I learned they were not allowed in some European winter rallies because they allowed the cars to go to fast!
