Wonder what the difference in programming is that causes the L2-L1 auto drop
to occur at different speeds based on year. My '02 drops at 82 mph (I've tested to confirm this) but I would like it to stay in L2 until a higher speed. I like to run in the 82-85 range on may trips and would rather it didn't drop when I've got the car loaded up with luggage and stuff. I know it can't be VAG'd, so wonder if there's another way to skin this cat.

I too would be very interested as my '01 drops even earlier at around 78 sustained
and as I am operating on a questionable front airbag (it has only dipped twice and only slightly...can you say wishful thinking) I like it to stay at L2 to keep it higher in case it starts to sag while driving...also the roads I drive on are a mess due to construction and the ride is better in L2 under these conditions...I just have to keep manually setting it back to L2 if I go above these speeds. TIA if anyone has a solution.

Just switch to manual mode when you don't want it to drop.
I just put my '01 in manual mode and it stays at L2 unless I tell it to move. Just press and hold both the up and down buttons for about 2-3 seconds and let go. The amber light will come on to show you are in manual mode. It will still drop from L4 to L3 and from L3 to L2 for safety concerns (rollover) but it shouldn't drop from L2 to L1 in manual mode. This link confirms it.
When you want to swtich back to auto mode just do the same procedure with the buttons.

http://www.allroadfaq.com/images/suspension_map.jpg</a

on the 2004 it is a suspension lock for jacking the car up.....
I think you mean the same thing since it is the same process... never thought to drive around in that mode though.
If you are worried about weight go Clark W Griswold style and tie the dog to the back bumper and Aunt Edna to the roof.... for me it would be my mother in law.

Like 2004Allroad-CT said, on the '02 that locks the suspension for jacking...
and will "release" at some point if you drive in jack mode. I can lock in L1, but with the 402 lowering, there are times I'd like to lock in L2 to drive.

Re: Jack mode is only good up to 15MPH.
On the '01 there are 3 modes, jack mode, manual mode and auto mode... straight from the owner's manual. I don't know why they would have changed the '02 so it has only 2 modes. Auto mode pisses me off so I usually keep it manual mode. All it seems to be good for is to drop it from L2 to L1 at highway speeds, sometimes when you don't want it to.
