Test Driven
We drive 25,000+ miles per year and the Q8 with the yr-1 package and a loaded P+ configuration seems like a reasonable interim vehicle while we await increases in battery life (between charges) and shortened charge times. If you're spending north of $80,000 the Q8 is (at least for us) a great car and if Audi had just used the mild-hybrid for the first 20MPH of speed (under "hard" or somewhat "hard" acceleration), I would leave the e-tron (as is) to the pioneers, you know, the ones with the arrows in their backs.
I do, very much, like the size of the e-tron, it is, "about" a Q6 -- which just may be the Goldilocks size after all.
After that, they're very similar. The e-tron FEELS much smaller even if it isn't too much. It looks much sportier because it rides lower. I prefer the central console situation in the e-tron, the phone charger and center console are placed better. e-Tron has a cup holder cover which is nice and Q8 doesn't, which people gripe about so much they're swapping to the EU part to fix it. Ride comfort feels largely the same causing, but feels better in the e-tron is stop/go due to less jerky/uneven acceleration that the Q8 has. e-Tron's cargo area is better, it has seat releases you can hit from the back the Q8 does not. e-Tron also has fragrance an air ionizer, which the Q8 does not.
Q8 does have a heated steering wheel which I'll miss in the e-tron, but the e-Tron has capacitive touch on the steering wheel, so when it's doing it's "auto" driving you really just need to keep a finger on it for it to drive itself. The Q8 asks you to constantly torque the steering wheel. My Q8 has the $5000 B&0 3D sound option, which doesn't sound better than the e-tron, but does sound LOUDER. e-Tron can precondition for heated/cooled seats and AC and glass surfaces on a timer prior to you getting in the car in the winter/summer, Q8 cannot.
End of the day there are a few things about the Q8 are better, but they're minor. I don't know how you could honestly say the Q8 is leaps and bounds better comfort wise, which is why I was asking the previous poster because I'm genuinely curious.
