You have got to get to the Ring, it is an great experience even if you drive it once! The atomosphere and energy is fantastic, plus the roads around the Ring are very good!

I recommend the Dorint hotel trackside!
That looks like a good way to go. Always nice to take someone else's ride out on a track too.

Oh, make no mistake about it, I will make it to the 'ring. It's at the top of my list of things to do once I'm in Germany. Since I was assuming the the courses were sold out (and I'll have to check again on that), I was actually thinking about driving it on my own car. I wasn't going to push it or anything. Like you said, I just wanted to drive it, even if was just once.

Besides the 'ring I'm also thinking about the training and then drive through Stelvio Pass -- which I only learned about recently thanks to a post in this forum. Any other suggestions?

Thanks for the links and for the hotel recommendation -- I'll check them out. I'm taking notes on every single tip I come across.

BTW, for Nurburgring related information, I've been looking at some sites, including these:

http://www.nurburgring.org.uk/

http://www.heiser.net/documents/nurburgring/

Let me know if you know of other useful sites.

Thanks!

Check out these, it might help:
http://www.nuerburgring.de/en.html - you can view this site in English. plus it has a calendar of when you can drive your own car on the track.

http://www.alpineroads.com/passstatus.php - here you can keep an eye out on status of various passes in Alps.

I'm going at the end of March and both places are on my must drive list. Keep in mind, there is a ban on photo/video at the Ring. If you get caught, you are banned for life! (that is kind of cool in a weird way - be banned from the Ring)

Have fun planning your trip. Just leave yourself enough flex time to adjust for unexpected.

CrazyIvan,
please check with Gary. I remember reading somewhere that they do not let to drive on ring cars with tourist plates.
Edit: found - here is a link

Next we headed to Koln and Then south to the ring, Nurbergring. We weren't allowed to take the car on the track an official there said due to temporary tags (also spelled out on their rules board clearly) so we missed out on that, but did hang out there and watched a bunch of cars...gotta find a way to drive that track, besides on a game console

Is that link correct? It points to a thread called "Favorite Z4 color?".

Anyways, I had read something similar. However, after that I found a newer post from somebody else saying that he was able to drive his new car on the 'ring.

So, I would try it. It doesn't hurt. In the worst case, you'll waste €22.

Thanks Crazy. I took note of those links and will be checking on those as well. Have fun on your trip too and don't forget to report back.

Link fixed, sorry.
That guy take ED on his M5 on 09/2006.
Few more links:
Nürburgring FAQ: Everything you need to know about the Ring & ED

Official BMW Guide to the ‘Ring

And last one
11) ED & Export plates
There was some confusion with ED plates at the ring long ago, but it was cleared up and hasn't been an issue in the last years. Just to be safe, some people pull up to the gate when the attendants are distracted, others will scoot up close to the car in front of them so the plates are not obvious. Basically, driving the Ring with ED export plates is not an issue.

That's what I remember reading somewhere! Thanks for digging it up!

I'm thinking about doing a Driver's day / tour thing in May or June this year but the info for Summer is not yet up. Maybe I will email them and ask for possiblities.

What I would like is to tour the alps for like three days or so with an R8 V10, and maybe do a driver's course in an S4 (not my own of course )

But I can imagine that the R8 V10 might be pretty expensive

Otherwise an RS6 maybe

We'll see if it comes to fruition or stays a pipe dream
