Default Audi is now providing european GPS units upon pickup...

I talked to Kathy Bis today and she said that they are now providing european GPS units at pickup. All you have to do is return it when you leave. That's one more thing I won't have to carry.

Default No, there are firmware differences between US and EU Nav systems...

so even with a European DVD a factory installed US system won't work. In the past you were on your own, but apparently Audi is now providing portable GPS systems to use during your trip. I'm not sure how they handle the return however, since the drop-off locations are a 3rd party and not actually affiliated with Audi.

I think it goes well beyond firmware...very different systems, apparently.

Default Not really, you can convert an EU unit to US...

Plenty of people over at the navplus.us forums have done it, and I'd assume going from US to EU would be basically the same. Still it's probably not really practical to do during a ED trip since it would require you to hack together an update disc to force the unit to install the EU software and you'd still need a EU map DVD.

Don't hate me, but...
How came BMW upload European maps for their ED cars and then when car get to US they upload US maps, and Audi not?
This is Hard Drive based system. YOu just install one extra apps then will be removed/uninstalled in US. What the big deal?
