Why isn't it called an A6 sportback since it has 4 doors?

Because they are trying to keep up with MB on the 'shooting brake' concept.

are they really going to put another sedan between the A4 and A6?

IMHO, the market segment way too crowded, especially when you consider other VAG cars- notably the Passat CC- also share this space. My guess is that the A5 sportback will either be an A5 with a larger hatchback trunk, or it will have small suicide doors like the RX-8.
