Default 1995 S6, not 1995.5, should I worry?

I'm looking at an S6 with 110,000 miles on it. It has the earlier (narrow 1st gear) transmission, though a PPI said 1st was fine.

I understood the problem with the earleier transmissions to be design related, but am I good if it's made it this far or should I still be concerned?

Thanks

Default Re: 1995 S6, not 1995.5, should I worry?

I have a 95 with 123,000 miles and no transmission problems.

I think the 95.5 is preferred, but not necessary.

Default Tell him to overfill the case with Militec-1 by 8 or more ounces...

and the sound will reduce considerably !

http://www.militec-1.com/</a

The sound may reduce, but the galled 1st gear remains :-)

Yup! you betcha, this works for pinion bearing noise, but should improve 1st gear noise too...

Default I wouldn't worry.

Just know that the first gear is weak and drive accordingly...or drive it like you stole it and plan a six speed upgrade. If you can keep the go pedal off the carpet in first gear and/or don't plan any engine mods, no problem. If you like to spend Saturdays at the drag strip, a six speed is in your future.

Personally, I held out for a 95.5 for the first gear...and the other 95.5 extras (which are generally cosmetic or minor).

Default The "design" problem was the pinion gear preload was set too high initially. The first gear galling..

was caused by idiots trying to do high RPM burnouts, etc. Granted, the narrow width first gear wasn't Audi's finest moment but under normal (non idiot) driving, there is no problem with it. The pinion gear problem was with some of the 92 spec cars and most (but not all) were replaced under warranty. This is not to say there weren't some later problems with the pinion gear but it was much rarer. You should read more about this at:

Default Beg to differ.

If you are running alot of horsepower, the first gear can be galled without driving "like an idiot" or doing burnouts. Hard acceleration with some engine mods is sometimes enough.

Default Whine?

or tick?
Generally, galling is more of a ticking noise. A bad pinion bearing would be more of a whine, but a bad pinion bearing should whine regardless of gear.
