...there's still the issue of tightening it when he's done...
 
I made a tool similar to the one koop made at this website: I did, however, weld it. Works great.

Impact wrench is how the crank pulley cast key gets sheared/cracked.

If it does it was not tight enough to begin with.

That's possible,my gun is pretty good,but after seeing the torque,,,
 
specs,it's possible it wasn't tight enough before.

it's a cast piece, not particularly strong
 
it's thought that the impact can cause hairline cracking around the key. if the key fails, the engine will go out of time and bend valves. it's happened to a few people on here.
when kday and i did our timing belts about a month back, we used a 4' pipe over an 18" breaker bar to loosen and tighten the crank bolt. it took pretty much everything that we had to loosen and tighten it. the breaker bar was flexing quite a bit.
