The fundamentals of installing a trip computer in a '93-'94 S4
I've been meening to post this for a while now. Unfortunately, I have been busy with an FAA checkride until now.
As many of you know, only the '92 S4 had the trip computer from the factory in North America. However, there is a way for '93 and '94 owners to install a trip computer in their car. I have personally helped a friend install a trip computer in his '94 100s. The install is very easy. All you need is a few parts:
-Trip computer boards('92 s4 cluster)
-Toggle Stalk(shares the windshield washer stalk)
-wiring
First, remove your old cluster and swap the trip computer circuit boards into it. This way you can retain the odometer of your current cluster. Next, find either the winshield stalk from a '92 S4 or a '92 100. This is used to toggle through the various readouts. Lastly, you need the wiring. Find either the S4 wiring or use the wiring from a 100cs.
There are only 6 wires needed for the install. Four wires are used for the stalk(+,-, ground, and resest). The other two wires are for the fuel consumption signal and the boost signal.
The boost and fuel consumption signal wires are routed to the kick panel on the passenger side of the car.

The coresponding wiring diagram for the S4.
As you can see, they are the same except for the added boost signal wire. Also, keep in mind that there is no way to add a trip comp to an S6 as the circuit boards between an s4-s6 and 100-A6 are completely differant. However, if you purchased a cluster from say Europe with a trip computer, it could be done. It would just reed in km instead of miles.

Did it last year not long after buying the User's Manual which talked about the trip computer. I was plssed didn't have one and was lucky enough to find a cluster from a 92 S4, and the control stalk. The wiring issues are still the same.

The biggest hassle was finding the right pins for the stalk since the computer control connections are not populated in the steering column plugs. I had to search through a bin of wires at the dealer to find the right one.
The connector on the back of the trip computer on the cluster was easy enough to find from ETKA.
