Default Just had the rear calipers rebuilt. Returned with calipers that don't fit over old pads

Never seen this before.

Basically i took my calipers off the car to get them rebuilt (tired of having zero e-brake) Got them back same day and went to put them on. Driver's side will not fit back over the pads. huh

So friday i took the caliper into work and gave the piston a turn back. Didn't really budge. Still doesn't fit.

Are there calipers that look VERY simular to ours that go be made for non-vented disc? Or did they use the wrong piston or something?

Default All I can say is the rear calipers for my 93 S4 with vented rotors are different than those for...

the rear of my "new" 98 C4 A6 avant with non-vented rear calipers. In the old VW days (early 1980's) the regular Rabbits had non-vented rotors but the GTI's had vented. The calipers were the same. The GTI pads were just thinner (had less material on them). Maybe Audi thought that the vented rotor calipers should have a wider throat so the pads could be the same thickness. I need to do some work on my rear A6 calipers so I will check this against the S4.

Are they rebuilt or exchange? Piston should retract flush with the housing.

Default A6 rear calipers are...

...same as the ol non vented set ups from the ol type $$ days. 36 or 38mm.
When replacing the pass side rear caliper of my hated 96 A6qa I was surprised to see that I could just go grab one of the 87 5ksq rear calipers I had & toss it on!

Default Just checked. Rear A6 = Girling 38 single piston, for non-vented rotor. Are the carriers the...

same for the S4/S6 rear calipers and the A6 rear calipers? If they are, I would might as well swap up to vented rotors and S4/S6 calipers if I have to change anything.

E-brake cable was attached. Bugga. I was hoping it wasn't. Now I have to work harder to figure out why no ebrake.

Default no can do Dave...

..the hat depth for the Urs4/6 & POS (piece of sheet) A6 rotors are diffrent.
I've looked at the same swap myself. I got tons of rear vented setups from v8's I've parted. But no workie.

The carriers are diffrent as well. The rear calipers on the 200 20v, v8's, & Urs4/6 cars are 44mm. Hence the carriers being diffrent.
