Replaced engine mounts last night...
Not too difficult of a job; obviously, the passenger side was more difficult but not as hard as I thought. The difference is definitely noticeable. Before, there was slack/looseness in the driveline, clanking when shifting and letting off the gas and getting back on in 2nd gear at around 3k rpm produced clunks. Not to mention, there definitely was a vibration when idling. Not anymore. The car feels a lot tighter, clunks are gone and driving it at low speeds in the parking lot is a lot smoother. What's interesting is that the shifting has become smoother; before, it would sometimes wouldn't go into first gear all the way and I had to slip the clutch a little to get it to fully go in. My theory was that the engine(and, by extension, the transmission) were sagging a little as a result of the bad mount and the shift rods/linkage weren't lining up properly with the transmission. That problem is fixed now too. The old mounts didn't look too bad, physically...they had 165k on them. Overall, a definite improvement and a worthwhile maintenance item.

How were you able to access the mount with the turbo in the way?
|
the top bolt can be undone with a long flexi-ratchet extension....
which slips through an opening by the turbo...then the two side bolts are undone from the bottom...then the mount just wiggles out through the bottom of the car. However, putting the new one back in is tricky and requires one person pushing down on the car while the engine is jacked up...this creates a big enough opening for the new mount to slide in.

I heard there are S6+ versions (more robust, but also more $) any truth to this?

Good job - you have encouraged me to do mine too!

i know there are S6+ tranny mounts but I don't know about the engine mounts...
|
Yes you're right, maybe I'm confusing the two!
