Starter Replacement

The starter motor on my 95 S6 Avant is signaling that it needs to be replaced. The Bentley and this forum seem to be mute on the procedure. However, it looks to be straightforward: disconnect the battery, remove the connections and the two bolts, and move the motor forward and then down, with possibly having to remove the oil filter. Am I missing anything? Are there any tricks?

Removing the oil filter is THE trick. There aren't any write-ups because it is pretty self-evident.

One thing to note is where the wires are currently connected so when you put it back, you don't put them back wrong. Some people have had issues with the sheathed ground cable between the starter and the solenoid.

You don't need to remove the oil filter to remove the starter! Unless you're changing the oil.

Several people have suggested removing the filter makes the starter removal easier. YMMV. ;)

Totally unnecessary.

I've done two starters and didn't remove the oil filter. It will make for a little bit more clearance but definitely not necessary.

Thanks for all the comments. The replacement went smoothly, without removing the filter. However, I'm finding that with the age of these cars dealers are having some difficulty with the current parts system in converting the VIN. Originally an incorrect rebuilt starter was provided and had to be returned.

I had ordered the starter before my original post. I have had this experience with other parts as well. But, thanks for your complete reply.

If you have questions about part numbers, post them here and/or check the PN (and price) at websites like GVAP, before ordering.
