Sunroof mytery- Can't find in FAQ
 

If someone can link me up to the appropriate thread there, I'm happy to review it there, but I scrolled through twice and didn't see it-

Sunroof opened on its own upon startup, and now won't close. Motor works fine. Short? Starter switch. Hear's the lowdown: I had run down the batt. a bit as I left my V1 on overnight. It's vamp connect hardwired in the sunroof panel. Anyway, when I try turning the switch on the panel exterior, I can hear the solenoid clicking, but the roof doesn't move, unless I move it to "tilt" mode, whereby it moves ever-so-slightly forward if I move it from the rearmost position.

Not in the FAQ. Just in the archives. Common problem when the battery voltage drops. Check battery.
 

Likely a safety thing, i.e. driving into water (like a ditch or lake beside a road) in an accident, the sunroof opens as the voltage drops, as a safety measure.

Or not.

Either way, check the battery.

That's not a solenoid. It's the gear on the motor jumping on the teeth of the "rack".
 

Start the car. Put the Switch in the closed position. When the roof stops moving (wide open, probably) remove the cover and use the emergency key to close the sunroof properly. Remove the key and try opening and closing the roof.

i have this happen in the summer, when the S6 is parked while i drive the miata.

it seems like the sunroof control loses track of the position of the glass. i remove the sunroof motor and pull the glass closed by hand. then i cycle the sunroof motor a few times with it uninstalled, and stop it in the closed position. reinstall the motor, and you're done. takes about 15min. make sure the glass is precisely positioned when you reinstall the motor - if it's off a couple teeth, the glass won't fully seal against the roof when closed.

it's very difficult to close the roof with the emergency key, at least in my car. i am always worried about stripping the mechanism so i do it this way instead.

A third method.
 

I have actually had success with twisting the control back and forth rapidly a few times. The key is to crank it open, then back shut before the roof panel can actually move. Always stop in the closed position! On more than one occasion, the roof panel has "remembered" where it should be and just closes.

That's worked for me before as well, but not this time.
