test drove a 93 s4, had a whine that would get louder and louder with speed...
i was even cruising down the road and turned the engine off and the "whine" remained the same. it was louder than the engine noise. car drove straight and pulled good but this whine, starting at about 10 mph and increasing all the way up to freeway cruising speeds is weird. any thoughts or same problems with your cars???
also there was some oil around the valve cover, some old and some looks fairly fresh. not too much but it is all along the side of the cover on the injector side. also the power steering hoses looked leaky because they were damp and there was hydrolic fluid built up below the pump.
anyways, this car is a canadian 93 s4 with about 110k miles, great inside and out. just that whine and the extra oil.
i'm gonna have my mechanic take a look.
should i stear clear of this one or should i get it if it is $7,000 to $7,500.

for $7k, go for it
where does the noise seem to come from. Most wheel bearing i have heard, seem to decrease when you turn the wheel one way or another. it could also be a carrier bearing for the driveshaft (although that isn't too common).
The valve cover gasket is a common and easy fix. The hoses are also pretty common, but are expensive to fix. If they are just moist, i wouldn't worry. You'll be hard pressed to find a car with dry hoses.

well it is in american dollar i'm afraid, but that whine just scared me this evening.
the hydrolic stuff i'm not too afraid of, the oil around the valve cover is what i was afraid of, but if it is not too big of a deal, then i might just go for it. depending if the seller will actually take 7 for it.
i will see what my mechanic says about that loud whine.
