Do I need to take a custom order?
 

So if I understand it right, when I build a custom order, I need to put down a deposit. Guessing like $1,000 US. Do I need to commit to the car at any point? Like when I place the deposit am I locked in? If the car comes in am I locked in? If the car is here and I find it has a bunch of scratches or the build quality is not up to par can I refuse it? I know once I walk off the lot with it, the car is mine, but before that are there any rules around custom orders? I do not intend to walk away from it, but my family has all these questions so looking for advice.

The deposit simply puts the vehicle on "hold" for you until it arrives to the dealership to ensure that no one else purchases it before it arrives (dealers sell cars before they arrive on the lot fairly often).

It is fully refundable deposit and you are not obligated to purchase the vehicle at any point. If you opt to not purchase the vehicle, the dealer will just add it to their regular inventory and you will receive your $1K deposit back.

We were told a $5000 NON-refundable deposit by one dealer and walked out. The next dealer said $1000 before ordering but then after we placed the order said it wasn't necessary. We paid the deposit just to ensure they would not sell to someone else.

I ordered plenty of cars and it depends on how hot the car is and how custom the build and how reputable the dealer is.

Example I ordered a BMW zero deposit but I have a previous relationship and my build is not super custom.

I did not put anything down. I have purchased many cars from the dealership.
