Just took delivery of a new holder with a lid. It is Audi part number 4M8.862.533.4PK. ZSB Cupholder LL. The cups are 2 1/2" deep vs. the car's 2 3/4" deep. The new unit cups are 3 1/16"OD while the car is 3 3/16" OD. I will post pictures when I do the install.

Showing gear **** removed and T-20 screw to remove
I installed the new cup holder with lid. The top plate is held in with 18 snap fasteners. Some are along each side and some are under the narrow black plastic strip between the gear lever and the cup holder and some are below the lower screen. You have to pull pretty hard to unsnap them. Using fingers alone worked better than a plastic trim tool.

After taking gear **** off stem

You can see where the snap fastners are located

The leather top of the gear lever is held in place with two snaps on top and the lever can be released with a T-20 screw. There is an electrical connector at the lower left corner that needs to be disconnected and the cup holder also has one under the rear cup. Once the chrome/black plastic plate is removed, there are 3 8mm hex head screws. Two at the back and one forward.

I purchased and installed the same - it was not difficult. Like some of the folks above I did not remove the gear selector and slipped it in to install. Honestly though if I knew how to remove the gear selector I would have (And recommend removing it) as the job would be MUCH easier. This vehicle should come this way. It certainly looks more elegant.

Did I miss the technique to remove the gear selector?

Are these the same parts used in the A8? If so wondering why these parts can not be purchased State side. Over $100 for shipping? $300 for a cup holder cover seems excessive. Not saying it's not worth it of course. Just sayin..
