One way AW has avoided becoming a kiddie fest with empty bumping posts and a sea of emoticons, is to use a software that places emphasis on discussion. About the only weak points are the classifieds and for some people, the search function. Vb has it's own issues with searching too - character limits, etc. Vb loads much slower on portable devices since it's a much heavier and clunkier bit of coding. Expect more ads (as is the right of the new owners of AW). IB owns other sites that use vb, and they want a more consistent way to administrate them all, which is why the change.
As mods, we are going to actively discourage any bumping, and may ban serial bumpers.
The topics <i>you</i> care about get tracked and are up at the top when a response comes in...you don't have to click through pages of threads to come to the most recent response(s) as those a month past n00b-dom know to reply in the subject lines - gets read much, much faster.
This makes older topics die away faster and only matter to those that care. Have you seen all the unncessary bumps in the vB-based forums of topics even a few years old?
Better yet, have you tried looking for that thread you responded to in vB? It's a complete eyesore/nightmare and coming from a Kawf format, severely frustrating.

Thread tracking has been unreliable for me here, so I almost never see new posts in old threads.
With the new software, I doubt thread bumping will be much a problem. The community is generally mature and the forums are not busy enough to bury threads in one day like on other boards. With a little moderation to discourage intentional bumping, it should be better for most.
