Need diagnostic help with Alpine NAV
I just purchased the IVA-W200 double-din display and the NVE-N872A DVD based NAV. The items were purchased from Crutchfield and my local installer installed them. He has worked on my car before and on other R32s...in addition to various other types of cars= of course.
Everything works, but this one thing:
It appears that the NAV does not "see" directional changes for a few seconds. For instance, I'm driving down the street and make a left or right into another street. The NAV takes about 10 to 15 seconds to figure it out...assuming during that time that I'm driving straight. The System Information shows that it is seeing my speed sensor and showing speed and it also "sees" satellites during this time. Normally, the unit will see five or six satellites.
The one catch is that the NAV antenna is mounted behind the instrument cluster..a spot recommended by an east coast installer who has done it numerous times before (probably with other units, not sure about this new one). Alpine says the antenna should be mounted outside...which means I would have to take everything apart to get it out. From a logical OR experience perspective, could this be something else?
I suppose it could be the NAV antenna location or some defective item...but have others seen anything like this with other NAV products?

Did a little experiment this morning
When the issue would occur, I would pull over and bring up the SAT info. The system would see anywhere from 4 to 6 satellites WHILE the NAV unit showed the incorrect location...

Excellent question
No, the brain is perpendicular to the floor. It is mounted vertically.
I spoke to Crutchfield this morning who spoke to Alpine and their suggestion was to try the brain flat. Although I'm not sure why this would matter...I'll be giving it a try later today.

You're right
The unit comes with a gyroscope and there is no other place it can be...since the NAV consists of a brain, mic and speak button along with the harness. I'm going to mount the brain flat later today and see if it makes a difference.
