Default Adding Rear View Camera

Hi all - I posted this in the main A6 section but no responses, maybe I'll have better luck here. I've just bought a 2010 A6 w/ Quattro, love it so far.

The A6 is the Premium Plus trim level, and did not come with a rear view camera. Our other car (Honda Odyssey) has a quite nice backup camera, and we've found we miss it. It looks like that the Prestige trim level comes with "7X9 - Rearview camera without APS" so maybe it's an easy add?

After some searching and reading, and reading some more, I've got this question:

How easy is it to add the OEM rear view camera system to my Audi?

It appear that I would need the following:

Camera control unit, goes in the trunk. Part similar to this: Control unit with software hardware: for reversing camera system. J772 for Audi A6 Quattro (2009 - 2011). #4F0910441D

A rear view camera, goes on the trunk, Part similar to this: Rear view camera. REVERSING CAMERA for 2010 Audi A6. #4L0980551D

It seems like it all connects up in the trunk - but how would the video get to the component in the glovebox? Also, does anyone know what the OEM Audi camera output format is like? Will a backup camera from Ebay have the same composite output?

Alright - so progression. I have bought a "Control Unit for reversing camera" part # 4F0910441D off eBay, so I have that.

I have a wire harness enroute to connect it all: https://www.kufatec.us/shop/en/audi/...i-a6-4f-mmi-3g

Now I'm just trying to figure out the camera. The OEM camera will work great, but it's $390. I wonder if a $20 rear view camera off eBay with a modified connector will work. Any ideas?

OK - I'll post more about the project later, but for now I've got an urgent issue. I've installed everything, but it's not working.

I get this code when I scan the modules with Carista. (I was using a friend's VCDS but don't have the scan at the moment)

CAN network gateway

I can see the 6C backup camera, and communicate with it, but I'm thinking with this Gateway incorrectly coded it's preventing it from showing on the MMI.

Does anyone have any hints for coding the Gateway and I guess the Rear View Camera using VCDS?

Researching this myself, and after reading through your posts it appears the cable you purchased is for the newer 3G MMI and is not compatible with your 2G system...

If you have already successfully corrected this, I'd love to hear how!

Nah, the cable was the perfect one, I have the 3G+ MMI. I got it all working. Here is the long version, from over at Audizine: Coding Rear View Camera

Short version was that I had told the car I had the Optical Parking System, which seemed to me to be the Rear View Camera. However, that is actually not the rear camera, but the buttons on the bumper that give distance information to the MMI. Once I turned that off with a VCDS all worked.

Hello! I have just installed rear view camera on my car. Before that I used ultrasonic parking system only and hoped that video camera will help me much, thanks to dynamic guide lines. But, in reality these guide lines do not give me clear understanding the width of my car and width of entrance to my garage. And again I have to use rear view mirrors. Do you have the same feeling? What do I do wrong?

After you installed the camera, did you calibrate the camera? To do you, you obtain (or print out on very large paper) a diagram that looks like two dominos. Then using a VCDS scan tool or something similar, you tell the car to "calibrate" the camera. Takes a few minutes. Apparently that adjusts the lines and distances to be accurate.

If you have done that (or can't) - what I would do is have someone with a piece of cardboard or something obvious to stand behind the car at different distances so you can see how where the lines are in relation to distance. (i.e., the red line is almost at the bumper, etc).

It does take a week or so to get comfortable with where the lines are and where objects are - it requires a certain amount of trust I suppose. The camera does have a wide angle lens so it see more than you would think.

Yes, I did.

This is exactly what I expected to hear. I agree, this is a matter of trust. Thanks!
