Owning An Audi In Australia

Owning An Audi In Australia
I am attending university in QLD next year. I was thinking about a new car when I still believed I was going to attend a domestic school, but now that I know I will be in Australia for my undergrad education, I still am considering a new Audi. I was thinking 08/09 A4 or A5.
I am curious as to owning an Audi in Australia. For one thing, most prices i've seen have been almost double what I'd pay in the US. Also, how much is gas, (Petrol for you guys)? Is it worth it for an 18 year old student to have a car in a different country?
Thanks,

Re: Owning An Audi In Australia
Petrol is about US$6.30 per gallon.
Car prices are significantly higher than in the US.
A4 prices run from US$48K (1.8TFSI FWD) to US$84K (3.2FSI quattro, the only A4 quattro available). A5 is about US$91K (3.2FSI quattro).
You might want to look at an A3, the 2.0TFSI quattro 6speed is US$49K, the 3.2FSI qauttro is US$63K. The S3 is US$63K! All these are base prices before options.

Here is a price list from audi.com.au
http://www.audi.com.au/etc/medialib/cms4imp/audi2/au/pdf.Par.0048.File.pdf
As for owning and maintaning a german car in Australia it is extra than what it would cost in the States or Europe because of the rediculous import taxes. That reminds me that the luxury car tax will increase to an additional 8% on a car over 57 thousand bucks.
I think wallaby made the right recommendation for a new A3 2.0 or even a 1.9 TDI since petrol is around $6/gallon.
You may even opt for a second hand A3 since some are quite cheap and parts are readily available for a good price if you shop around.
