Default Roads you may wish to avoid at 23:00 hrs on a Saturday...

<center><img src="http://www.europeancarweb.com/features/0509_03s+2006_Audi_A3_20t+Front_Cornering_Mountain _Road.jpg"></center><p>During a recon assignment recently, I found a large group of motoring enthusiasts on one of my favourite mountain passes.

It was nice to see a group of kids (P Platers mostly - not that there is anything wrong with it) driving their vehicles on this technical stretch of road at more than double the signposted speed in some sections, practice makes perfect.

The only thing is that the foresight, skill level and attitude of a number of these drivers left much to be desired and as such, is a potential accident waiting to happen especially on a public road.

I saw many cases of young enthusiasts driving their parent's car fitted with tyres and brakes barely fit for Monday to Friday commuting let alone downhill attacks on a mountain pass (you may consider your life to be worth the cheapest brakes and budget tyres money can buy, but what are you kids worth) - don't even get me stated on some of their racing lines or car control.

One of the benefits of spirited driving at night on a mountain pass is the ability to see oncoming traffic around corners and reduce your speed to avoid incident - the majority of these enthusiasts lacked this vital skill, especially at that hour of the night when residents are returning home.

Even after repeatedly flashing your high beams and stopping back from the corner to avoid incident these kids were still travelling on the wrong side of the road (in one instance two abreast with no chance of making a pass) completely oblivious to the residential traffic making its way up the mountain.

These kids need to learn there is a time for this behaviour and it is not when other common motorists and residents are awake and travelling home after a night out, not to forget the proper place to learn and master your craft is in a controlled environment such as a track day or hill climbing event.

Maybe I'm just getting old...however if you are young at heart and slightly stupid, head to Mt Keira in Wollongong early on a Saturday night.
