Just did the unthinkable to my brilliant black paint...
Normally it snows and I brush the snow to within 1-2" of the paint, and leave the rest alone. This prevents dragging snow or a brush across the surface of the paint and swirling the **** out of it. Well, for the first time in 7 or 8 years, I had no choice but to run the brush right down to the paint to remove the heavy/icy crap that built up overnight. Thankfully I had a chance to stop by the car wash last night and rinse a month of accumulated salt, sand, and other stuff off the paint. The film of dirt however...still there. Oh well...I'll get over it.

Sometimes I regret cleaning snow off the car when the ice follows and sticks to the body instead.

DON'T EVER .....
DON'T ever do what I did a couple winters ago. I had a good 2 feet of snow on my truck, so I took my plastic shovel, and kept 1" above the metal, and took all the snow off... unfort. it pushed the ice, and scratched the hood and roof! I was able to use my pc and buff it out after a number of passes, but it looked like h*l till I could do that!!! I now only use a brush, and make sure I'm more careful when ice is on the base!

Got you beat - 2 yrs ago, in my haste to clear off some icy crust, I
got the brilliant idea to pound (lightly) on the hood & trunk with the wooden end of my snow brush (being "careful" just to break up the ice & not the car...or so I thought) - upon completion of this task, I then saw that I had created about a dozen nice qtr-sized dimples in each panel (didn't beak the paint fortunately). Haven't gotten the repair done yet (body shop wants ~ $700 to fix)but learned my lesson going forward: "Thou shalt not pound on the ice crusties"

Meh...I'm on my 3rd black car, and 1 other one wasn't much different (Santorin blue).
Knowing how to wash/detail makes all the difference in the world. Living with the days when it's dirty help prolong my life span, and I'm pretty happy when it is freshly washed.
