"Brake Pads Warn" Light - Questions
I have a 2008 S6. I just hit 16,000 miles.
My Brake Pad Warning light just came on.
Questions:
1)
I called my Audi dealership and asked what triggers the light. They said it goes off at 3mm. When I asked how soon I need to come in for brakes, they said I should come in in the next 1000 miles. I'm embarrassed to say, but that could be 4-6 months. I hate taking my car in for service, as I'm always afraid that they will scratch it or damage something.... If the fronts are indeed at 3mm, and the backs are say 5-6mm, would you just suggest that I have all four replaced at this time?
2)
Since my warranty is over, I have been bringing my car to a mechanic that was suggested. They seem good and I have been satisfied with them. When I asked Audi for a price quote on the brakes, they estimated $750 for the fronts and $650 for the rears. I am going to call my mechanic and get a quote from him. I assume that it will be a few hundred less. I'm going to ask if he is putting on "Audi Brakes"...Question-Is there such a thing as "Audi brakes" or does Audi just replace with a major brand? If there are "Audi Brakes", should I demand he uses "Audi Brakes"...or what brand would people suggest?
Thanks,
Larry

You likely have many thousands of miles left, but its a good time to replace them. As pads get thinner, the poiston is under more strain - so yes, do it.
Audi pads are made by a variety of companies - primarily Jurid, Brembo and Pagid. All of them are fine. If you an get them, i actually like TExtar the best, and a great, cheap alternative is Centric Posi-quiet which is hard to distinguish from OEM.
If this is your first set of pads the rotors are fine - the pads will wear in to any irregularities quickly enough. Have the brake fluid completely flushed - it should be done every 2 years anyway to avoid water accumulation, corrposion and reduced heat ability.
