Q5 BRAKES. TRUE OR FALSE.
So the dealership advised me that it’s time for some front brake pads and rotors. Is it true that the rotors are a different material so they can not be resurfaced and they must be replaced? This is the first I have heard of brake rotors needing to be replaced instead of resurfaced. Is the service writer just trying to make a extra few bucks off of me or is he telling the truth.

Not many re-surface these rotors. They're a throw-away item. the permissible wear limit is minimal before it's out of spec.

The dealer was saying the rotors are semi carbon or semi something that’s why they can’t cut the rotor.

Rotors are bang on spec for size from Audi and actually I think these are better than the zimmerman I currently have on. The ceramic pads I got came with new wear sensors so all I have to buy is the hardware. They look no different to the akebono ones I have.
Again though they are bang on spec for size.
and by the way, I am a regular guy and have no connection to max brakes. I will update on performance in the future and I use my Q5 in my job as a sales guy, I do about 4,000 km per month so it won't take long for them to show any rotor warps or pad issues.

I just put a set of Centric pads and rotors on a friends Q5. Easy enough job. It IS true that rotors might be approaching minimum thickness at 50000 miles but measuring them is the only way to know. I typically change rotors every other pad change on my Audis. That statement about the rotors being of a material that cannot be turned is unfortunately false. They were turned in manufacturing. Dealers don’t turn them though. There is very little extra thickness to work with. Go to TireRack.com and price out your pads and rotors to get a feel for what they cost. Whoever does the work WILL need VAG com (VCDS) or similar to retract the electric parking brake. I have VCDS but I used Carista and my iPhone to retract the parking brakes on my friends Q5. Worked like a charm. Carista is inexpensive. Nice to have when traveling too in case you get a CEL while away from home.

I did Akebono ceramic pads (EUR1322) with new Zimmermann rotors a couple months ago. Wonderful feel, and the cost is surprisingly low. I think the rotors were $75 each (via Prime) and the pads around $80 (also Amazon). Changing them was easy, but you could find anyone to do it for you for less than the dealer. I just added the Akebono rears (EUR1018) to cut out the dust.
Just an FYI.
ETA: didn't answer your question. Yes, they can be turned. No, Audi nor most Euro specialists will do it. The cost to replace is cheap enough that it wouldn't be worth paying for, IMO.

first time here but in answer to the question above google Max Advanced Brakes, Richmond Hill Canada. I just got my set of drilled rotors and pads for a tad over $200 delivered. I thought hey even if they are junk I will get through winter and can put new brakes on in the summer at that price.
