4 questions all regarding a Check Engine Light and Oxygen Sensor
I have a CEL that comes on sporadically (2002 A6 2.7 Tip. 55,000 mi/ 88,000 km).
It seems to happen when it gets pretty hot outside.
Audi hooked up the unit under the dash (OBD, I think) and it came back :
17521 - P1113 - 035
Bank 1 Sensor 1
Internal resistance too large
Sporadic
They told me it's the right front oxygen sensor.
I'm being quoted $250 for the sensor
(part #030-906-262-L) and $350 to install it.
They also suggested to drive the car until the CEL stays on rather than replacing it now (they were making enough money on other stuff they were doing on the car). They also suggested cleaning it would help, but, since the labour cost is the same either way, they said it might as well be replaced when it stays on because a "cleaned" sensor can come on again in short order.
It seems to come on, stays on for a day or so and then goes out again and stays off for a week or so.
Several questions:
1. Is there a fuel tank additive that I should be using that would "clean" the sensor and prolong my having to replace this right away?
Stuff like Sea Foam or I noticed some of you mention a product called BG44K carbon deposit remover (I've never heard of this BG stuff and not sure where to get it in Calgary)?
2. I noticed on one thread someone suggesting using a modified VW sensor from an online source.
I wouldn't be doing the work myself, so is this something an Audi dealer would install or is this aftermarket product an iffy idea that may not even work and could just be a waste of time and money?
3. I noticed on one thread someone saying that 3 - 4 cold starts should re-set the CEL. I tried shutting the engine off and restarting 4 times in a row, but, the CEL remained on. The engine was warm when I tried this however.
What constitutes a "cold start" and after you've started the car once when it has sat for awhile, if you immediately restart it again, is that no longer a "cold start"?
4. Given the data numbers at the top, are there any other suggestions to get rid of the CEL other than paying the dealer roughly $610 in total? When the CEL is on, it doesn't appear to affect the car's performance.
Thanks in advance for helpful ideas.
