FYI: Esso has added 10% Ethanol to it's Premium Fuel 91 and that's why the price is the same as 89..

Default FYI: Esso has added 10% Ethanol to it's Premium Fuel 91 and that's why the price is the same as 89..

But it is unknown how long they will keep the price the same. Looks to be a temporary situation.

I spoke to a lady at Imperial Oil and she read off an email to me that she received on the subject. It seems all premium gasses will be forced by the Government into blending ethanol.

I'm for saving the environment but does that mean that the new 91 at Esso is less powerful than the old 91?

Default I heard they will be required to put only 2% ethanol. not 10%.

Shell is as follows
87 = 10% ethanol
89 = 5% ethanol
91 = 0% ethanol

Default Anytime ethanol is added, amount of energy is lower

Stick to Shell Who knows how long Shell can go without using ethanol in their premium.

Default BTW, is Esso part of those Top Tier gas stations?

In response to issues on the 3.2 but really applicable for any Audi/VW engine (or really any engine!)

Thanks Tanner. I avoid and will continue to avoid Esso gas whenever possible.

Default Less powerful? I suppose. Lower energy density. But more knock resistance as well. Sunoco 94 ...

allows the 93 octane program to produce more power than 91 (ethanol enhanced or not), but just results in poorer fuel economy.

Default There is no ethanol in Esso 91

Even if it had it would still be 91 octane. Octane rating remains the same. Expect a reduction in fuel economy with ethanol - whether you see it or not depends on how much is in it. Since their sticker at the pump says up to 10% ethanol its not enough to noticeably affect fuel economy. BTW Sunoco has had ethanol in all its grades for many years now.
