You think we are not aware? Repost baby.
IMHO it's everything to do with political correctness.

Read the debate under the article

I'm so worried it will come to the states too - Look at Bridget Bardo being fined in France
for what she said - Free Speech is going away.

BB

Uhhhhh, there is no free speech. That's just an illusion no matter where you go. In the US
you just get sued into oblivion;-)
The internet is probably the only place speech comes close to be truly free.
Ultimately Canadians will probably get fed up with things, and because the system is smaller and slightly more wieldy, things can actually be changed. It's just a matter of what will break the camel's back at this point. Although it takes some funds to get into politics, it's a drop in the bucket compared to the US, but I foresee some kind of movement or political action that will push things back.
The nice thing is that for the most part (with some exceptions) Canadian courts tend to laugh silly suits off the bench more so than the US counterparts, so these guys are very unlikely to collect any money at the very least. The people bringing the suit are going to have to create their own grass roots newspaper.

http://everything2.com/index.pl?node_id=1241813</a

Maybe we will now wake up to this cangaroo court which was set up..
by Governments to, mostly, protect women from job related discrimination and sexual harassment.
Unfortunately, the Court, which operate outside the judicial system, has expanded its mandate (typical bureaucratic process) to encompass anything it wants to pass judgement on.
It would not be too bad if the complainant had some cost associated with the process but they are compensated by the court whether they win or loose. The defendant however faces all costs and any penalty.

Best thing to do...
Picked this up from slashdot:
Please write your MP [parl.gc.ca] and let them know you want no part of this bill. Please write a polite and informed message to them, encourage them to check out Michael Geist's page (link in article above). The world does not need another DMCA that empowers big media at the expenses of consumers' rights. Write your MP.

Members of Parliament

The hearing is going on right now in BC. I guess the CIC feels it's best chance is on the left
coast. Hard to predict how it will go. Tribunals have a court like pre-occupation with precedents but I think the action will fail because it was mass print media. Cases like this are weighing on public opinion in Canada. Same with law and order issues.
