I think people just don't like me here, but here is my reason. Was looking at Passat Wagon, heard a lot of problems with them about the same price as Audi FWD. Wanted new car as i was driving a Jeep YJ for 12 years and i though 4x4 was the next best thing to sliced bread until i got cocky and lost control of my car in a snow storm and hit a guard rail. 4x4 gives you more control, but you still have to drive at the same speed as everyone else. Got my new A4 Avant FWD in January of this year and didn't have snow tires. I gotta say it handled the snow pretty well. Looking like a genius with the gas prices these days. vincent, know your well respected here, but we just don't get as much snow as you guys do in Mtl. Maybe 4, 5 bad storms a year. See picture cause that was as bad as it got here in T.O. this past winter.

having driven quattro Audi since I have my driving liscence...
I had a hard time with my FWD GTI this winter. When you are used to be able to climb a hill with quattro and now you can't even get in the parking at school, it made me realise this winter how lucky I was to be able to drive quattro car. Now, all year long I want AWD. When accelerating on a concrete road, FWD sucks, when cornering, FWD sucks. You can't compare Jeep 4x4 to Audi quattro. Really, it's not the same.
But you are totaly right, quattro will not save your *** when you lost control. It'll just make you go faster in slippery conditions.
