Was gonna get one for blu-ray playing, but the ones that are in production now only have 2 USB ports (versus 4 in the old ones) and don't have PS/2 backwards-compatibility anymore. (<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ps3#Retail_configurations">retail configurations</a>)

I wanted the extra USB port so that I could support two controllers plus a third for an IR-receiver (<a href="http://www.remotecentral.com/articles/ps3-ir-remote2.htm">ir remote for PS3</a>) and I wanted the PS/2 backwards-compatibility for obvious reasons...

What are the downsides to using the bluetooth remote that you can buy for it?

If you ask me, the fact that the PS3 doesn't have an IR receiver is a ridiculous limitation. But it does help them sell more proprietary Bluetooth remotes.

I feel as a consumer in the 21st century I shouldn't have to put up with such vendor lock-in. Why *SHOULD* I shell out $25 more dollars for their special single-use remote?

The PS3 has only been backwards compatible for slow adopters for like, 2+ years!

Don't blame Sony for procrastinating, they never were going to offer PS2 compatibility forever.

I also found out that BestBuy sells a remote that uses IR (via a USB dongle). I could use that to train the Harmony remote.

Sony didn't want to just kill the incredibly strong PS2 community so gave everyone ability to play old games on the new machine... Because it's taken 2 years for them to catch up to 360 numbers... Now that the BR - HDDVD war is over, and the PS3 has solid titles.... Time to start nailing the coffin on the PS 2 so to speak.
