Front wheel drive is enough
Sure awd has its advantages but front wheel drive is enough.
And I never bother to clear any snow away from any of my wheels.
I just get in and drive.
Two wheel drive is plenty for any skilled driver.
Remember, even awd cars still only have four wheel brakes and two wheel steering. Traction for going is irrelevant in winter, what you need is traction for stopping and steering.
There ain't no substitute for winter tires, it's been proved time and again that snow tires on two wheels beat awd drive every time.
Of course you realize when you lose it in an awd vehicle you're just a passenger, it is not all it's cracked up to be. In fact, to get the best out of awd you need to be a better driver than if you "just" have fwd. A much better driver actually because you can lose it in a big way with awd.

Lose it in an AWD??
Define "lose it in an AWD". If you've lost control of a car with AWD, then most likely 1) you judged the driving conditions incorrectly, or 2) overdriven what the car is capable of. Frankly that applies to any car, regardless if it's AWD or not.
Any time a car gets out of control, the driver is the cause of it.

ESP + Quattro = more control
I don't know if you ever tried a quattro in winter.
As for me.. I'm not the best driver out there.. and lots of times ESP saved my a$$.
FWD vs AWD on winter.. AWD has just better gripp. Knowing both cars have winter tires. On icy roads, a FWD might spin on himself and move towards right or left depending on the slope of the road.. while AWD will advance slowly but in a straight line.

I agree FWD is enough
I have gone through 5 cars since I could buy my first one, two of which were Quattro. In snow, I have noticed FWD drives just as good as Quattro when using all season tires, each car having its advantages. The snow tire qualities are also quite at par with each other WHEN driving at the recommended speed for snowy roads. Although the quattro came in handy when I needed to accelerate fast from a stop light in snowy conditions...or high spirited snowy drives.
I lived in New England for about 4 years and it snows quite a lot there so it will be nice to have quattro, but here is the GTA quattro is not needed for me. I have driven quattro through 4 winters and FWD one winter...& I have concluded it is just a nice feature to have. FWD with a good snow tire is also a nice weapon.

most people bought the FWD Audis because of pain on the back differential problems, ripped cv boots
this time around you got 4 to fix, and its more of a headache but it has its advantages avbiously. Therefore it depends on the drivers style and preference, I personally prefer RWD BMW 330CI or so ...
