Default We Canadians must be nuts to accept this kind of crap....

And especially work/pay conditions like this...

<b>"Appointees will receive a $134,000 annual salary indexed to inflation until they retire or reach age 75, followed by a very comfortable pension - and both are indexed to inflation."</b>

Tell me which private sector guarantees these kinds of wages and conditions?

That is insane to pay out this kind of money when you know most of them won't even be there to do their jobs. For crying out loud they are not even voted into power they are appointed by the PM who usually puts buddies or friendly people into those positions that favour his point of view.<ul><li><a href="http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/capress/081222/national/senate_appointments">http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/capress/081222/national/senate_appointments</a</li></ul>

Default It's called "graft" and is endemic to all politics, even in democracies

The theory is you have to pay the best to attract the best. However, the appointment process pretty much guarantees low quality.

This is why Western Canadians, and Alberta in particular, have been calling for an elected senate, if we are to have one at all. Triple E: equal, elected and effective. That way at least the people get who they deserve. Alberta has even elected senators and had the PM appoint the elected candidate which is going some way to address your concerns.

An election today would likely return a majority Conservative government

Default ??? if harper ever gets a majority he will abolish appointed senators. he wants an elected upper

house. the liberal stacked senate is blocking his attempts to do anything.

Default "...abolish appointed senators..." +

Even if you discounted the Liberal Senators, the idea would never fly...Quebec probably would veto the move.
