I think the privacy issues are a little overblown...
the risk of someone targetting your local isp's email account is greater than an anonymous web based email like gmail. the info for the ads is gleaned by software looking for key words. it's not like there's an office with technogeeks reading everyone's gmail to get sensitive info. plus 1 gig of storage with google search features for your emails means no more deleting emails to free up space and easier filing. it's the killer email app that will become the new standard.

having beta tested gmail for a few days now, ithink
what makes it great for me is the search and conversation tagging feature. emails between parties can be stored as conversations and logically grouped together. very handy. also emails can be labelled as opposed to being filed. this may seem like a small difference but emails can have multiple labels thus allowing for email storage to be more flexible. If i were more paranoid I'd worry about the privacy issue too, but then again other programs do exactly the same thing ( spell checker for instance ) that gmail is doing. Yes they will derive revenue from it from targetted marketing. but is that so evil ?
