How is this accomplished? Can a SWF file be referenced?

You just need to host it somewhere and provide the correct URL in your sig.

Default hmmm. last time I tried that, it wasn't possible.
disabled functionality?

It would be better since technically, you could do cool stuff but the files themselves could be smaller (less bandwidth)

I've tried using a Flash (.swf) sig and the forums software "blocks" it
