Forum specific FAQ's...
there are three main problems that contribute (i think) to the noob question problem.
1) no forum noob sticky at the top. (as suggested by rka)
2) the search function sucks ***. holy stinking crap does it suck. you cant even search for "1.8t". duh. we tell noobs to STFA, and we send them to use a crippled search function.
3) the tech section needs headers that make sense. infomation about brakes and suspensions are found under "wheel/tire". this doesnt help the cause. Also, perhaps the title bar up top should say:
forums---model guides---tech articles---registry--etc......
"tech" is a little vague.
anyway...my thoughts.
That way, anybody new will see it at the top, and everyone will see it whenever it gets updated. If they don't want that, they'll just hit "untrack thread." Either way, if they know they need to check it, there's still a link to it at the top.
Plus, not only are AW searches "teh suck" (there, I said it), but there are some things you just can't search for, b/c you'll always get too many hits. Nobody's even going to try searching for "leases," they'll get 10,000 hits. That just needs to be in a FAQ right in front of their face.
Bringing Audi to Life for Audi Fans
The lack of an effective FAQ program is IMHO, the single biggest weakness going on here. It's even worse than search quality.
