just wanted to say thanks for the best site on the internet, and a suggestion for improvement.......

i know you guys get flak (even from me sometimes), but when it comes down to it, there is no other site i visit even half as much. great job, and once you fix that damn pull-down menu, things will be perfect.

i, and others, have brought up the annoyance of the giant pull-down menu. JET, you and i bantered back and forth about this a while ago. just wanted to reiterate my support for changing it.

my previous suggestion was to start with "core" subjects (like A4, A6, Regional Forums, etc) and have the core subject menu "roll over" into a more detailed menu. ex: hover over the A4 core menu, and have it split out into B5 and B6. same for regional, have it split out into Midwest, SoCal, etc.

this would simplify the process of switching from forum to forum quite a bit, not to mention eliminate what seems to be the only element of "non-professional" looking web design. ive always thought the pull-down menu a bit crude.

however, ill stop short of suggesting a return to the docked menu bar in the left-hand corner (because of space concerns). maybe you could find a way to program a "hiding" menu bar in the left hand corner (so it just takes up a sliver of space when not being used). then, when you hover over the sliver, over pops the menu with all the forums on it.

anyways, just wanted to know if you guys have anything in the works. thanks, and keep up the good work.

Wouldn't that require Java and slow things down?

I like the pulldown menu.

Everything is right there and easy to get to. I'm sure there might be a better way to do it, but your suggestion of the more detailed menu would take more time to navigate (instead of just finding the forum that I want and clicking on it, I would have to find the category I want, move to it, then find the subcategory and click on it...way too much work).

I would think a compromise might be okay...put the top 10 forums listed on the main menu and everything else on sub-menus, but I don't think you'll ever have the instant performance that you get from the straight HTML drop-down they are currently using.

a better idea

i think the pulldown menu is fine to list ALL forums. but give us a setting in the preferences to pick 5 "favorite forums" that would appear at the top of the dropdown menu.

5 should be sufficient even for a PW like me
S4, OT, NorCal, Feedback would make my list.

That's a much better idea.

I would like that a lot...as long as it doesn't slow the menu down at all.

it shouldn't. it'll be part of your cookie or something.

good idea
