ha, the only thing my 5k shares with that car is the steering wheel.
That audi is hands down the nicest audi ever produced... RS4 is a close 2nd.

Can I ask a dumb question.......
I've always wondered, but failed to ask, What was the reasoning behind 5 cylinders? I know Volvo still produce a turbo five, but why? Isn't an inline 6 so balanced and all that it would be that much better to just throw a six in instead of a five.....what am I missing and please excuse my ignorance.

IIRC, the I-5 is naturally balanced, and its shorter. So they retained a lot of options
in terms of mounting and hood lengths. The I5, especially in turbo form is quite potent. It's probably one of the smoothest engines I've ever driven. Plenty of low end torque, and they pull right past redline.

SPORT QUATTRO............
and to think it wasn't even all that fast ----but it was quick!!!!!!!
|
I-3, I-4, I-5, I-6, I-8 and I-12 have been done.
Anything inline is going to be as balanced as anything else inline. Unless you start swapping balance shafts, valve control and such.
|
"balance" shafts!!!!!!!!!!!!
we dont need no stinkin balance shafts--except for the new [soon to be old] 3.0 v6 -we never had a balance shaft-----by the way mike what the f--k are doin up at this time [1:17am] besides greasin
weaser to porn!!!! :0 |
I didn't know that...I thought the I-6 was the oniy inline naturally balanced...
That's what I get for thinking....
|
See now I thought the only true naturally balanced engine was the boxer (requardless of cylinders)
|
Agreed, 5 cyl AAN is the best motor Audi ever made.

Re: Can I ask a dumb question.......
I think in Volvo's case it just comes down to packaging. The small (40/50) and mid-sized (60/70) simply can't fit an I6 because Volvo's current inline engines are always turned transversely between the wheels. There's just not enough space in smaller Volvos for the engine and tranny to fit if you use an I6.

I drove a Sport Quattro a few years back... very intimidating.
