Default Ask 10 people, get 10 different answers: running AC lights off a car battery.

Hey guys,

I'd like to light up my storage unit, but there is no electricity available. I found some LED shop lights and I want to use a power inverter to power them from a jump-start box. So I hook everything up, with the jump box charged, and everything works fine for 10 min or so, then the lights go out, and the fault light on the inverter comes on. So far I've heard that I need:

a pure sine wave power inverter.
a power inverter with at least a 20Amp output.
a new power inverter because mine is bad.
something that brings the volts up to 120.
to build my own lighting apparatus using LEDs from radio shack.

My power inverter is rated at 400W, for what its worth. The lights need 38W.

Whats the right answer???
Thanks in advance.

You might be making things more complicated by converting voltages twice.

I'd bet that the LED shop lights are DC voltage, although they've been adapted to take AC, which means they have a transformer to produce their native voltage. Any time you are changing voltage and current type, you're loosing power as heat.

If it were me, I'd convert the shop lights to take 12v, or get some that are 12v (think RV interior lighting), and run them off a spare 12v car battery.

I'd check if your jump box is designed to provide 12v over an extended period, like a regular car battery.
