Default 86 Coupe GT Timing belt

Just did a full service on my car. Was driving it afterward and after 10 minutes heard a horrible squeeling rattle and immediately shut car off. Pooped hood and could smell rubber burning. Took off cam belt cover and found the timing belt barely hanging on. Went to start to get it in my parking space and she jumped time. Does anyone know if these are interference motors, if so is it possible I am safe since it didn't seem to jump time untill the torque from the starter yanked it?

Default Yes it is

And the only way you are going to know is to put the belt on correctly and then do a compression check.

There is a range that it can go before causing damage and that has to do with which engine it is. The KX is an interference engine.

Keep you fingers croessed! I hope you're ok.

Oh and BTW, find out why it loosened up. A bad waterpump pulley not tightened down enough maybe?

How come all of the info i.e. charts list the KX as non-interference? Should there be any up down play w/the water pump pulley?

Default If you ask 10 people

You probably will get a 50/50 split on whether it is or not. The KX is 8.5:1 so there actually is a lot of clearance. The dishes in the top of the piston "should" allow it to clear for a large number of degrees of rotation. But I believe at TDC and maximum lift on the valves and at RPM it will hit.

I have heard of people with a KX motor bending valves and also not.

In any event, check it and see.

There should NOT be any play in the WP pulley, either in the mounting bracket or the pulley itself. The belt should be tight with minimal deflection.
