Default changing water pump 91 Audi- non-quatro

Pretty sure the water pump is bad, overheats, loses coolant, etc.

How hard is it to change (no book)

Photo at autoparts sore shws a gear. Is it driven by the timing belt?

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

THanks

Default H20 pump is indeed driven by the timing belt.

In addition to that it is also used to tension the timing belt. First you need you pull the front end off the car to get in there. Next remove the drive belts and the timing belt cover. Set the motor to TDC. With the motor at TDC loosen the 3 bolts the hold the pump on 2 13mm's and 1 6mm allen. Next move the pump with a pry bar to relieve the tension on the belt. You can now pull the belt off make sure the cam and crank pulleys don't move. You should be able to snake the pump out from behind the rear timing belt cover. Main points being with TB off don't let the cam/crank pulleys move. Clean mating surface where the pump mounts to the block and lube the new pumps o-ring seal with some grease. See link for additional info on setting the motor to TDC.

http://www.sjmautotechnik.com/trouble_shooting/eng.html#tim</a
