Default Nasty motor problem

I have got the nastiest motor problem that I was really hoping someone could shed some light on. I bought a 98 Audi A4 (i4 5v Quattro Turbo) today knowing it needed a bit of work, but the main issue is that the car is completely dead between 1400 and 2500 rpms. I can put it in first and start going very slowly but once it hits 1400 it dies out completely for about a second then catches itself. The other way to get going is to floor the pedal and hop the RPMs jump to above that 2500 mark and then drop the clutch and make it roar.

I was told that the computer system needs to be reset and that the TPS sensor was screwed which is what causes this issue. I have to go to an Audi dealership and pay up the *** to get this fixed which could take well more than what I paid for the car, so any help is very appreciated. Also, if this isn't the right forum I apologize and hop a mod can move it to the proper one
