I just ordered a new bike for myself, so I have a few left in the basement you could chose from relatively inexpensively. I can get a list together for you or you could stop by, we can also scavange and build one out of all the parts. Let me know if your interested.

IIRC ... Gary Fisher = Trek
 

Trek owns Fisher and build all the frames. I've been very happy with my Trek. Smooth and reliable, but I'm not an advanced rider or ride tons of miles a year.

Biggest thing is to figure out how much you want to spend. I think when I was shopping for mine I set a limit of $800, then looked to see what I could get for that.

tony.. I think you'd like a 29er. Just get a Cobia. And yes Fisher is owned by Trek

29s are becoming more and more appealing. :)
 

I had a Trek 6700 I got for cheap and it was great, but it was a little small so went bye-bye.

Honesly a 29er jsut feels better vs 26HT especially under Lrg/XL riders...
 

plus you get a bit of inherent plushness from the larger wheels and chainstays. I'll never got back to a 26HT. BTW I have a Sm/15.5 Paragon frame &amp; Reba29 fork if you know anyone looking.

Yeah, GF=Trek (still a good bike). I really like some of the Specialized Hardtails
 

But our cycling team doesn't deal with Specialized anymore so I'm not sure what pricing is at on those (nor could I hook you up). But any hardtail from any of the manufacturers with mid range components will be fine. Also, to save on some cash (and determine if you're better off buying just a frame), are any of the components on your current bike salvagable? Or do you just not want to go that route?

The current bike has bottom-end components, and they are pretty disheveled.
